About Oakland
The city of Oakland is a great location to buy real estate and is truly one of the Northern California secret jewels. The closets city to San Francisco and located just across the Bay Bridge (roughly 10 minutes away) it offers incredible diversity in both the population as well as neighborhoods and areas. The City of Oakland has a population of around 420,000 inhabitants and is bordered by Berkeley, Piedmont, Alameda, San Leandro and Emeryville. Some of the local highlights include the fabulous hiking and biking trails as well as various parks. Lake Merritt which is positioned in the center of the town has a wonderful trail for walking, jogging and biking and features wonderful attractions such as Children’s Fairyland said to have been visited by Walt Disney years ago and been the inspiration for his future empire. The Montclair Hills area of Oakland is nicknamed the Urban Forest and if you were dropped into the community unaware of your surroundings you could easily assume you were in the Marin area or another sophisticated forest village in the Bay Area. The city has a long relationship with music and musicians with deep roots in the Jazz and Blues scene. Yoshi’s is the most renowned jazz and blues club in the Northern CA area and is located in the Jack London Square area of the city (Oakland’s Harbor area with great lofts, harbor walk and night life scene). Yoshi’s has recently opened a 2nd location in San Francisco (but the Oakland scene is where it’s at). The City of Oakland has a thriving restaurant life which has been evolving through the recent years. Incredible chef’s that have evolved out world class restaurants such as Alice Waters Chez Panisse and if one was to come to the City for one day to sample the cuisine should walk the College Avenue area of Rockridge. Rockridge is Oakland’s trendiest neighborhood with College Avenue (ripe with its hip shops, cutting edge clothing shops and foodie’s favorite haunts) cutting through the middle of the community. Oakland has several weekend farmers markets including one in Montclair and another on the edge of Rockridge, the most well known is the Saturdays Farmer Market which is located at the base of the Grand Avenue area retail district. Great food, fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers, artisan crafts as well as live music can be found here weekly and it is well worth the trip. Oakland has so much to offer and if you are looking at making a decision of where to rest your saddle, Oakland should be well investigated and placed at the top of your list. Some of the neighborhoods you will want to look into (depending on your price range) are as follows; Crocker Highlands, Trestle Glen, Rockridge, Upper Rockridge, Glenview, Temescal, Montclair, Piedmont Pines, Oakland Hills, Redwood Heights, Jack London Square, Adams Point, Haddon Hill, China Hill, Dimond, Laurel and the Maxwell Park areas.
